Abstract

Shotgun metagenomic analysis of 1,047 Indian adults reveals that microbial diversity (Shannon index) correlates inversely with HOMA-IR (r = -0.42, p < 0.001) and predicts metabolic syndrome incidence over 3-year follow-up.

Background

The gut microbiome's role in metabolic health is well-established in Western cohorts but poorly characterised in South Asian populations.

Findings

We identified three distinct enterotypes. Enterotype 2, dominated by Prevotella copri, was associated with significantly improved insulin sensitivity even at higher BMIs.
